View the short Message from David Hicks to GetUp Members and sign the petition calling for a full review of our anti-terror laws, including the unnecessary control orders.
Petition Text : Dear Prime Minister,
We expect a trusted counter-terrorism system that responds to legitimate threats, not imagined or political ones. That means not sacrificing our rights and legal principles in the name of preventative detention, control orders and sedition laws. We call on you to conduct an urgent independent review of all 44 pieces of anti-terror legislation and create an independent watchdog to monitor their use and necessity.
History will remember the Bush-Howard era of national security as one marked by draconian anti-terrorism laws that encouraged a climate of fear and did little to protect us from terrorism. With the end of that era, we now have a chance to write a new chapter of history.
An independent review and watchdog can weed out the most abhorrent features of the system while ensuring a more robust and accountable system that keeps us safe.
Tell the Government you’re ready for a new era in national security by signing the petition against the Anti-Terror Laws.
Last Minute News : Since that video ended up on prime time television on 20th November, the Australian Federal Police will not renew the order.
Late Statement from David Hicks :
“Today’s AFP decision is a great relief for my family and me. I owe the Australian people a lot. I want to thank all Australians for their support. The decision not to renew my control order will allow me for the first time to now move on with my life. Thank you.”
