Jules Dassin leaves us

American film director Jules Dassin has died in an Athens hospital after a short illness, at the age of 96.

Dassin was one of the many blacklisted in Hollywood. He moved to Europe where he married the Culture Minister in the former Socialist Government of Greece, the actor Melina Mercouri.

After Mercouri’s death in 1994, Mr Dassin fought to realise her main goal, the return of the Parthenon, or Elgin, marbles which were stolen from Greece by Britain.
